Family update
My uncle wrote and asked what we were up to. This is what I wrote back, in case you’re interested:
If you have an Internet connection and a browser you can find out quite a lot about us. If you Google Vance Stevens the first hit there that’s not about me is way back on page 5 (all the rest for 5 pages are hits to something about me) and there are some good links in the right...

Is this blog the cat's meow?
i-speech seems to think so, and have created a permalink here http://www.ispeech.org/view/10/761496 attesting that fact just from my having tried out their site. I simply entered my text in the text box and I got a permalink AND an embed code, which I entered here via the HTML feature in the text box. Now to see if it works …

I am not able to post this, I’m becoming disillusioned with Tumblr. Perhaps it’s too long. It keeps disappearing. At least after the first time I backed it up. I’m going to put it at a wiki instead … hours wasted posting, watching it vanish …

I’ve been thinking a lot about these topics lately and how I can converge them into an abstract I have to write today, a ppt I have to create for an important online conference presentation, and a talk I have to write up as if I were delivering a ‘paper’ at the TESOL conference in Denver this March (I’m on two symposium panels).
I was thinking up to now about WHICH to...

These are some notes on a session I moderated with Kim Cofino, author of the very cogent blog post Making the Shift Happen (Always Learning, Feb 24, 2008): http://mscofino.edublogs.org/2008/02/24/making-the-shift-happen/. The occasion was a live meeting in Elluminate (donated by Learning Times) as part of the Multiliteracies for Social Networking and Collaborative Learning Environments course...

Monitter what's going on in the Twittersphere
Carla Arena says she likes my Tumblr Blog because she can pick my brain here. Tonight I picked hers. In the EVO moderator’s Elluminate session she mentioned she was playing with Monitter http://monitter.com/ which is a neat little mashup to let you moniter in real time what’s being said on any three search strings. That’s not apparent, but the search ‘terms’ can be...

I’ve had problems just lately getting Twitter in my office where I work. Twitter is at http://www.twitter.com . A technician offered to help restore service but asked me to first explain what Twitter is. I wrote:
Twitter is an online social networking software that is unique in that it limits all correspondence at any one time to 240 characters, the limit of text in an SMS message.

Testing media competencies?
Heike Philp started this off by suggesting a test “in the use of state-of-the-art Internet communication technology, an intensive 3-month course, costly, formal, portfolio and assessment with the result of obtaining a certificate,” and she says it would be a “a simple LANCELOT test/ assessment” that would cover “not pedagogical skills but media literacy.”
